This morning’s walk was cancelled by an unusual request from my wife: She asked me to not go out because there is a “white supremacist” rally taking place about two blocks from our home today. I suppose the worry in this case is that, with tensions higher than usual, I might be assailed by someone I won’t be able to see while I’m out.
All this after a local man was beaten by young teenagers “because they were bored” last Saturday(links below in case anyone is curious).
- Police: Man attacked because teens ‘were just bored’
- North College Hill community unites to show support for assault victim
- NCH shows support for man beaten by bored teens
- NCH kids allowed to stay home during white-power rally
I acquiesced to her request to remain home for the morning, of course, not because I feel unsafe, but because I know she has our best interests in mind with the request. Racial tensions seem to run high in the Cincinnati area and I’m not about to question her awareness of the issues here as she and her family have lived here her whole life.
So no walk, no big deal. I it is a sad thing, though, that kids can be brought to do such terrible things seemingly at random, and that it can be cause for adults to annoy and intimidate others in public over something so trivial as the color of a person’s skin.
I will probably walk again tomorrow, but to make Michelle feel better, I may have to promise to take the dog with me. Ha!
As for all of the people involved in this local fiasco, may all of their suffering be eased. Be well, friends.
